LET THEM PASS: Mental Strength & Emotional Resilience in the Light of Islam

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
The strongest hearts are not those that never feel pain, but those that know what deserves a place within them.
A Single Sentence Can Live for Years...
A teenager lies awake at night replaying a classmate's mocking words...
A wife silently remembers a hurtful comment spoken during an argument months ago...
A student begins doubting their abilities because one teacher questioned their potential...
The words lasted only a few seconds.
Yet they occupied the mind for months...
Sometimes even years...
Why?
Because some arrows don't pierce the skin.
They pierce the heart...
Every day, invisible arrows are fired at us; criticism, rejection, judgments, taunts, false assumptions, and negative comments.
The question is not whether the arrows will come.
The question is:
Will you carry them?
Your Brain Is Designed to Remember Pain...
Psychologists describe something called the negativity bias. Our brains naturally pay more attention to painful experiences than pleasant ones.
One criticism often outweighs ten compliments.
One rejection can overshadow years of appreciation.
From a survival perspective, this helped human beings remain alert to danger.
But emotionally, it often traps us in endless cycles of overthinking.
We replay conversations...
Imagine better responses...
Wonder what people think about us...
Carry burdens that the speaker themselves has already forgotten...
Islam does not deny this human tendency. Instead, it teaches us how to master it.
Allah Never Promised a Life Without Arrows...
Many people believe that a peaceful life is a life without criticism.
The Qur'an teaches something entirely different.
Allah ta'ala says in the noble Qur'an:
"You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allah much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allah - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of determination."
(Qur'an 3:186)
Notice what Allah does not promise...
He does not promise that people will stop criticizing you...
He does not promise that everyone will understand your intentions...
He does not promise universal acceptance.
Instead, He promises guidance on how to remain firm despite all of it.
That is resilience.
The Prophets Faced More Than We Ever Will...
When we study the lives of the Prophets, we realize that emotional resilience is part of faith itself.
Nuh (عليه السلام) spent centuries being mocked.
Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was rejected by his own father and thrown into the fire.
Yusuf (عليه السلام) was betrayed by his own brothers and imprisoned despite his innocence.
Musa (عليه السلام) constantly endured criticism from the very people he was trying to save.
And our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was called:
- A liar.
- A magician.
- A poet.
- A madman.
He was insulted...
Mocked...
Rejected...
Physically harmed...
Yet none of those arrows changed his character. His worth was never determined by people's opinions. His identity was defined by his Lord; not by the opinions of people.
Emotional Strength Is Not Emotional Numbness...
Many people believe strong people never cry. While Islam teaches otherwise.
The Prophet ﷺ cried when his son Ibrahim passed away.
He felt grief...
He experienced sadness...
He lost beloved companions...
His heart felt pain...
But his pain never separated him from Allah.
Real resilience is not the absence of emotion.
It is the ability to feel deeply without allowing emotions to rule your decisions.
Feeling pain is human...
Remaining faithful despite pain is strength.
Which Arrows Should You Let Pass?
Not every arrow deserves your attention.
Let these pass...
- Mockery
- Jealousy
- Rumours
- False assumptions
- Harsh judgments
- Online negativity
- Words spoken out of anger
These arrows belong to the one who fired them. Do not make them your burden.
Which Arrows Should You Keep?
Not every uncomfortable word is harmful.
Some are gifts... Like:
- A sincere friend correcting you.
- Parents advising you.
- A teacher pointing out a mistake.
- A reminder from the Qur'an.
- A hadith that exposes a weakness within you.
These arrows do not destroy you.
They refine you.
The believer is humble enough to accept correction and wise enough to ignore mockery.
Build a Shield, Not a Wall...
Many people respond to pain by building walls.
They stop trusting...
Stop loving...
Stop caring...
Islam does not teach us to harden the heart. It teaches us to protect it.
A shield allows love to remain...
Compassion to remain...
Mercy to remain...
While preventing unnecessary harm from settling inside...
That shield is built through:
- Tawakkul (trust in Allah)
- Sabr (patience)
- Taqwa (God-consciousness)
- Dhikr (remembrance of Allah)
- Du'ā
- Good company
- A clear sense of purpose
The Difference Between Self-Confidence and Faith...
Modern culture often says:
"Believe in yourself."
Islam teaches something even stronger...
Believe in Allah.
Self-confidence rises and falls...
Some days you feel capable...
Other days you don't...
But reliance upon Allah remains constant.
The believer does not stand firm because they think they can overcome every challenge alone.
They stand firm because they know Allah never abandons those who place their trust in Him.
As Allah says in the noble Qur'an:
"And whoever relies upon Allah; then He is sufficient for him."
(Qur'an 65:3)
Do Not Give People Authority Over Your Heart...
When our identity depends on people's approval, we become prisoners of their opinions.
Praise inflates us...
Criticism shatters us...
Acceptance defines us...
Rejection destroys us.
But when our identity is rooted in servitude to Allah, people lose the power to define who we are.
Their words become information.
Not identity.
Advice becomes an opportunity for growth.
Not a verdict on our worth.
Let Them Pass...
Life will never stop sending arrows...
Some people will misunderstand you...
Some will criticize you unfairly...
Some will question your intentions...
Some will dislike you for reasons you may never know...
You cannot stop every arrow...
But you can choose whether it remains inside you...
Every day, life asks the same question:
Will you carry today's arrows into tomorrow?
Or will you leave them where they belong?
The strongest hearts are not those that were never struck.
They are the hearts that refused to become a home for every arrow.
Protect your heart...
Anchor it in Allah...
Walk with dignity...
Accept sincere advice...
Ignore empty noise...
And when unnecessary arrows come your way...
Let them pass.
The believer's heart finds its strength not in the silence of people, but in the remembrance of Allah.
Ya Allah, make seeking Your pleasure our greatest concern, keep our hearts steadfast upon You, and do not let us become captives of people's praise or criticism. . Aamiin!
